Definition Newcastle disease (ND) is caused by virulent strains of avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) of the genus Avulavirus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae. There are ten serotypes of avian paramyxoviruses designated APMV-I to APMV-10.
