| Definition | European foulbrood is a d ise ase of the larval and pupal stages of the honey bee Apis m e ll ife r a and other Ap is spp., and occurs in most countries where such bees are kept. The causative agent is the non-sporulating bacterium Me lisso c o c c u s p lu to n iu s. Subclinical in fe c tio n s are common and require l abo r ato ry diagnosis. In fe c t io n remains enzootic because of mechanical contamination of the honeycombs. Recurrences of dise ase can therefore be expected in subsequent years. |
